Beyond Communications: Understanding Society Through Sociology

As someone with an undergraduate degree in English Literature and a Master’s degree in Communications, my decision to pursue a Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of Indonesia in 2024 has been an intellectually transformative journey.

I came to realize that many of today’s challenges whether in government, industry, public communication, or society-cannot be addressed through communication alone. Communication is not merely about understanding what is trending today. It must also be able to examine how issues evolve over time, how public framing shifts, how different actors enter and influence public discourse, and how similar patterns reappear across different contexts.

This is where sociology becomes essential. It helps us understand the social context, power relations, structures, cultures, and societal dynamics that shape an issue.

I feel deeply grateful to be studying at the Department of Sociology, University of Indonesia, one of the leading centers for sociological studies in Indonesia with a strong reputation across Southeast Asia. The professors and faculty members are not only intellectually and methodologically outstanding, but also remarkably supportive and approachable.

Their teaching makes theories and methodologies that initially appear complex much easier to understand and engage with. Throughout my academic journey, I have felt encouraged, motivated, and supported.

The professors are highly accessible, open to discussion, and genuinely care about their students far removed from the stereotype of academics as distant “ivory tower” figures.

Admission to the program is certainly not easy. It requires meeting rigorous academic standards and going through a highly competitive selection process. Success in the program demands commitment, discipline, and consistency.

Throughout my studies, I have maintained a strong commitment to academic engagement: I have never missed classes, actively participate in discussions, and regularly meet with my supervisor and co-supervisor for guidance.

This experience has strengthened my belief that sociology is not merely an academic discipline; it is a critical lens for understanding contemporary social change, industry dynamics, communication, politics, and society.

Today, sociology is more relevant than ever. Its ability to help us understand complexity, uncertainty, and social transformation makes it increasingly valuable not only in academia but also in professional and industry settings.
